What's Cub Scouts all about?
FAQ - Info for New or Prospective Scouts!
These are answers to frequently asked questions from scouting parents.
Don't hesistate to contact one of the leaders (see Leadership Directory on the left) if you have more questions.
Q: What is the monetary cost of scouting?
A: The dues are $60 per scout. This covers the dues for the Simon Kenton
Council ($50) and part of the money needed for Pack and Den activities.
Q: How is Cub Scouts organized?
A: Bailey School is the sponsoring organization for the PACK. The Pack
has at least one DEN for each grade, sometimes multiple dens if there are more
than 10 boys in a den.
Q: How is the leadership of a den organized?
A: Each den determines its own leadership. If there is an experienced
parent, they will sometimes like to take the lead. Another method is to rotate
leadership, and other times there is one "mentor" that may help all lead. In
general, if each parent takes responsibility of one den meeting, no parent will
need to do more than two meetings during the year.
Q: How is the Pack leadership organized?
A: The key positions are:
Cubmaster: Responsible for running Pack meetings, approving merit awards, overall CEO
Treasurer: Keep track of the income and expenses.
Popcorn Kernal: Organize and run the major fundraiser which is selling popcorn.
Outdoor Coordinator: Plans the camping events. Usually 3 events per year (late summer, fall, spring)
Pinewood Derby Chair: Plans and executes the Pinewood Derby in January, the biggest single event.
Awards Chair: Gets the monthly merit awards from the Scouting store.
Chair: Serves as the communication point for the pack with the Simon Kenton Council.
Q: What help is needed in the Pack Leadership?
A: We currently need leaders for:
Tigers (1st grade) and Bears (2nd grade) dens.
There are also several volunteer positions listed as OPEN on the Leadership Directory page.
These volunteer positions are more of a one-time obligation and a great way to help the Pack.
Q: How is Cub Scouts organized?
A: We are Pack 116, which is in the Darby Creek Districk (Dublin with Madison and
Union Counties) of the Simon Kenton Council. Simon Kenton Council's offices are
on SR 161 near I71.
Q: What is the general budget and funding methods for the Pack, Dens and Councils?
A: We fund ourself through dues ($60, with $10 staying in the Pack) and commission
from Popcorn Sales. Not including major purchases (i.e. Pinewood Derby track),
it generally costs about $100 per scout for yearly activities. Since 32% of
popcorn revenue stays with the pack, we target for an average of $300 per scout
in sales. The Council funds itself primarily through popcorn sales to pay for
salaries and upkeep of facilities (includes Camp Lazarus in Delaware County).
Q: What are the major events of the year for the Pack:
A: Campouts in late summer, early fall and spring; Pinewood Derby in
January, Blue/Gold Banquet in February; Tubing at Madriver Mountain in March;
end-of-school-year picnic in May with Raingutter Regatta. We will also have
activites like "Go-See-Its" to places like the U.S. Air Force Museum, Kayak
training, and community service activities like helping the Dublin Food Bank.
Q: What goes on at Pack Meetings?
A: Generally, we start with a Flag Ceremony and the Pledge of Allegiance.
Each Pack meeting is hosted by a Den. The Den sets-up, performs the Flag Ceremony, usually
presents a skit, provides the snack and then cleans up. At the Pack meeting, every Den shares
what they've done together over the previous month. Leaders are given any
award merit badges the Scouts have earned and any announcements are made. We then will have a
Pack Activity, which could involve a special speaker (in the past we have had The Bug Man, a
magician, a midget-car racer, or a Knight), or a reward activity for reaching a Pack goal.
Q: What are other benefits of Cub Scouts?
A: With membership dues comes a subscription to Boys Life Magazine!
Q: What about uniforms and such?
A: The uniform is a Cub Scout shirt (blue or tan for Webelos) with a
neckerchief and hat that indicates den level. These can be purchased at the
Simon Kenton Cub Scout Store, which is at I71 and SR 161. One shirt should last
through all 5 years of Cub Scouts. This is also the place to get the guidebooks for the year.
Q: How Family-Friendly is Cub Scouts?
A: Cub Scouts are very family-friendly. All siblings are invited to join
in all activities including campouts, picnics and banquets.
